A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A TIMBER

The past year brought us an interesting mix of projects both large and small.
From a sturdy staircase made of Cypress, to timber trusses of all shapes and sizes, the life of a timber can take on many different forms. At the shop, after working through a winter of sanding, sanding, and more sanding, we are finally seeing the fruits of our labors.

We take the time to sand every timber before we apply our custom finish. This important process removes any imperfections or milling marks in the wood. The process also helps to equalize the pores of the wood  allowing the timber to accept the stain more evenly.

In the photo below compare the timber on the left which has not been sanded, to the timber on the right which has been sanded. Both timbers have been stained.

Notice all of the mill marks on the unsanded timber on the left. It also has areas where the stain has darkened the wood due to a more open grain.

The timber on the right, we believe, is the high quality product that our customers seek.

Want to see some sanding, watch  our hand planer at work!

We had a great crew for a Commercial Timber Raising near St. Louis. The frame went together with ease on the first day and was raised into place on the second day.

This Douglas Fir Outdoor Pavilion is sure to be a focal point at the upscale Bishop's Post restaurant in Chesterfield Missouri.

Check out the curved rafter timber trusses on this outdoor pavilion. We recently fabricated, prefinished and preassembled these trusses in our shop. The natural color wood peg joinery really complements the dark walnut stained Douglas Fir timbers.

The bottom chord is 12"x12" with a span of 24', the client requested the oversized timbers for a more rugged aesthetic Once on site, it was a breeze to construct this pavilion.

The exterior of our Pennsylvania Project is really taking shape. The custom stained Western Red Cedar timbers frame a welcoming space for relaxing or entertaining on the back porch. Timber Frame decorative accents are used around many of the windows and doors.
